The last of the snow. Took the boy to work and it was so foggy, you couldn't see 50 yards. The air was 30 degrees warmer than the day before. All the snow melted and it started to rain.
In between the rain clouds, I got some of the busted straw bales (thanks goats) raked out of the barn and burnt. I was planning on just using the tractor and spreading it out on the gardens but the air hose cracked from the cold and blew apart. So, the flat tire didn't get air and hence the burn pile.
Now it's freezing again! 3 days of 65F and pouring rain, then low 30sF. Geez, what happened to global warming? LOL I'm not fond of this time of year, not at all. Warm, cold, icky, muddy mess! Then it freezes and makes it even worse.
30 days to seed starting. I always feel like I'm in limbo this time of year. Nothing to do but break ice and feed critters. The big waiting game.
Actually, I'm almost glad I can't afford to really go anywhere, it seems this years flu season is a real dandy. All those folks running around town hacking and coughing their germs all over everything and everybody. Eh, I think I'll just stay right here and not share someone elses flu.
On the whole prepper thing.... I for one am glad the end of the world came and went. Now maybe all the crazies and nutjobs will go away and leave us folks that just want to be self sufficient alone. I can get back to what I love and not have to constantly explain why being self sufficient is better than a closet full of mre's, LOL.
So, are we taking bets on me actually making it to Valentines Day before I start any seeds? ROFL

That burn pile made a spectacular picture.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you have to burn the hay? Could you not use it for feed or something? For hens?
Yeah, all us canners must be looking for zombie hoards. I did not think the world would end. That guy just got sick of carving that stone calendar and decided to just quit his job. He walked away to party and to chisel no more.
And, I don't believe the government is going to collapse. I do believe prices will rise and life will be more precarious.
After 64 for several nights and 70s during the days, I finally had to put socks and shoes on again. I already miss my sandals.
i didn't even make to mid january...and betting you don't see mid feb without seeds in some kind of soil.
Deletesaturday i planted cabbage, cucks, 'maters, and mellons.
i know, i know...even in my planting zone 4, i am pushing the very early planting dates real hard for all but the cabbage. i planted in peat pots so i can transfer to gallon cans they get too big. when the little guys poke their heads up, i will hjit them with a grow light so they have a total of 12 hours sun light, real or simulated. and if i have 'maters and cucks for memorial day, great, the neighbors will be green with envy
came home from an appt with cardiologist around two this afternoon-everything is coating up with ice..three days of 73 degrees and then zoom, twenty minutes of climate change yesterday afternoon brought rain, ice, wind, and 32degrees currently. glad the larder is full, the propane tank is full and all of the laundry got done...flannel sheets and quilts on the bed and i am ready to hibernate awhile. lol, my seeds came in the mail on friday...i will be spending my spare time drafting gardens on paper :)

ReplyDeletestarting my seeds next week!cant wait!
ReplyDeleteWarm, cold, all I can say is I am done with this stuff. And starting seeds, lol getting ready to start on some of my flowers and perennials. I have been averaging at least 1 seed catalog a day the past few weeks. Bring on Spring!!
ReplyDeleteHey I almost forgot. My blackberry plants had a lot of baby shoots come up this past summer despite the drought (thanks to almost running our well dry lol). So if you need some let me know :)
ReplyDeleteFun read! and so with you on those preparing for end times. If they come they come and who wants to be here anyway in the aftermath? I prefer enjoying today, stocking my cellar and living for this day, the only sort-of guarantee any of us have. Been living mostly self-sufficient since 1972, no livestock these days except chickens, turkeys and bees, but with venison and lots of garden and fruit these are enough.
